Top 7 Eco-Conscious and Sustainabe Initiatives at Saadiyat Island Abu Dhabi

At Saadiyat Island, one of our primary areas of focus is preserving and protecting the beautiful environment and ecosystem that we have been blessed with. Our sustainability programmes in Abu Dhabi cover a host of measures, including the elimination of plastic water bottles, biodegradable packaging, turtle patrols, and renewable energy production.

You can read more about how Saadiyat Island contributes to sustainability in the UAE here, but in the meantime, here are a few of our most noteworthy eco-conscious initiatives:

Waste segregation and recycling

In line with the UAE’s sustainability initiatives, our beach resorts, restaurants and institutions like the Saadiyat Beach Club are committed to segregating waste and dealing with each type as is appropriate. We identify everything that can be recycled and restrict what ends up in landfills.

Championing the ocean – Jumeirah at Saadiyat island Resort

Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort has the rare distinction of receiving an ‘Ocean Champion’ badge from the global NGO The Oceanic Standard, in recognition of its efforts to go completely  plastic free. In addition, it has been awarded the titles ‘Sustainability Steward’ and ‘Straw Free’, the only resort in Abu Dhabi and even the Middle East to be so honoured.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability is practically woven into its operations as the team, guests, suppliers and stakeholders are involved. Among its programs include installation of water stations, the placement of compost systems in all kitchens across the resort, and sourcing sustainable packaging of food products. Additionally, team members and guests alike are taken through a series of educational programs on the various ecoconscious initiatives run by the hotel.

Plastic-free beaches

Along with our private resort beaches, both of Saadiyat Island’s public beaches, Soul Beach and Kai Beach are in the forefront of reducing the use of plastic, with an aim to completely replace these with recyclable or biodegradable materials. Keeping our beaches pristine and hospitable for our unique ecosystem is of utmost importance to us.

Day-to-day operations at Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas

Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas’ sustainability programmes form the foundation of its operations, starting with the Ecolab Sustainable project, which optimized laundry processes to reduce water and energy consumption. The resort also uses electricity generated from solar panels on the property rather than fossil fuels, with the added benefit of cost savings!

Reduced carbon footprint at St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

St Regis boasts an average carbon footprint of 184.52 kg per room night, and water footprint of 940 liters per room night – and aims to reduce its environmental footprint by 50% by the year 2025. The resort has been awarded The Green Key Award and The Green Globe Standard, both of which are prestigious ecolabels that recognise initiatives around sustainable tourism.

Where wildlife love to hang out – Saadiyat Beach Golf Club

As the region’s first ocean golf course, it goes without saying that Saadiyat Beach Golf Club actively takes part in ecoconscious initiatives to safeguard the nature that it’s enveloped in – measures are taken to ensure its irrigation system is sustainably run and water consumption is reduced, that the property is made conducive for wildlife to roam by providing native dune lands and lakes.

Biodegradable guest amenities at Rixos Premium

Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island uses only biodegradable products in all the guest amenities and aims to eliminate singleuse plastic. Other ecosolutions include waste segregation and the implementation of water treatment plants for irrigation within the resort.

For its efforts, Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island has earned the ISO 14001 and Blue Flag certifications.

What’s next?

Most of our hotels and resorts have replaced plastic bottles with refillable glass bottles, installed water efficient systems and recommend reusing towels.

At Saadiyat Island, we’re aware that reducing our impact on the delicate ecosystem is a constant, ongoing endeavour. Watch this space for more eco initiatives from our hotels, restaurants and museums.
